Actionscript Adventures

Sounds like it could be a pretty bad ass cartoon… ;)

So, I haven’t tickled with flash for a LONG time. I mean, long (*cries* my age!). I think the last time I remember messing with flash was when it was still a baby. After hearing the conversations at the GDC, a whole lot of people really liked flash for it’s ability to help developers prototype an idea. And, well, those guys at 2dboy really blew me away with their flash prototype. I have some ideas, and I really don’t want to spend a ton of time tearing my hair out while drinking a hundred or so cans of my favorite soft drink to get things to work right. So I decided to go down this route. A) I’ll learn something new (Actionscript 3, ftw… o_O (AS3 != (AS2 || AS1) by far) and B) It’ll be a lot easier. I hope.

But for now, this is my simple test I spun together in an hour for the sake of A) Can I do something? Anything? and B) Can I embed this thing into my site for those that enjoy tinkering?

I’d have to say, Yes, and Yes. Enjoy this quick beast.

Unfortunately it looks garbled under whatever Flash player I’ve got installed on my Ubuntu Firefox on my work machine. I’m sure this is a problem at my end compared with at yours; I’ll check it again under Mac OS X tonight.

I’ve also got to get back into Flash and ActionScript due to it’s inherent ability to slap together quick prototypes.

Ah, it works under Mac OS X. I haven’t had enough experience with dogs to fault your choice of pet, but I do question your choice of soft drink ;) . Maybe it’s because you don’t have the versions with cane sugar in them.

If you’re keen on getting a head start in ActionScript 3.0, I recommend the book “ActionScript 3.0 Game Programming University” by Gary Rosenzweig. It goes through the basics of making a whole range of standard Flash games, and it’s what I’ve based the few games I’ve already made in Flash on. I’m finding it mainly useful as a set of worked examples for Flash, but I find it a good way to get inside the head of a seasoned Flash game developer when it comes to breaking down a project.

Great feedback. Thanks! I’ve been trying to find a good book on flash that centers around games, but there are quite a few with salty ratings. I haven’t looked into the one you mentioned, so I’ll have to try that next.

I love my Dr. Pepper, but I should probably take a break from it. ;)
